So it's finally summer, and I've got quite a reading list cut out for me. I'm including more here than is likely for me to finish in the summer, but you never know. I'm going to try to behave as if right now is the beginning of graduate school for me, so maybe that will help.
I had three books recommended to me by Dr. Aquino, who will be my advisor. I also had several books recommended to me by Ben Guyer, a friend of mine who's a PhD student in religion/philosophy at FSU. And finally, in my own searching I picked a couple other books, and had an article recommended to me by my friend Carter. All on the topics of atonement/justification/deification/theosis. I'll be trying to review and respond to what I read on my own, and then post something readable here.
In the most likely chronological order of my reading (variations in Amazon delivery rates, available money to spend or copies at libraries could change the order):
"The Logic of Penal Substitution" by J.I. Packer (finished)
On The Incarnation of the Word by St. Athanasius (working on)
Past Event and Present Salvation: The Christian Idea of Atonement by Paul Fiddes
Saved From Sacrifice: A Theology of the Cross by Mark Heim
The Doctrine of Deification in the Greek Patristic Tradition by Norman Russell
On the Human Condition by St. Basil the Great
The Life of Moses by St. Gregory of Nyssa
On the Cosmic Mystery of Jesus Christ by St. Maximus the Confessor
The Creative Suffering of God by Paul Fiddes
Christus Victor: An Historical Study of the Three Main Types of the Idea of Atonement by Gustaf Aulen
So there you have it. Lots of good stuff to process and write about. This will be a good summer.
